Wind energy in the Gulf Cooperation Council region: progress, challenges and strategies for development

Purpose Until recently, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, whose members consist of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, has not significantly focused on green transition. Specifically, wind energy development made minimal progress relative to that other regions. Design/methodology/approach The abundance cheap fossil fuels in region incentivized renewable development, where this taken place solar technologies are often preferred. Findings However, lower technology costs together with lost investment opportunities – also common elsewhere world, increased pressure GCC from developers. This work qualitatively addresses challenges strategies for area. It focuses analysis different proposed type investments driven by a state-supported fund such as utility-scale investments, industry-specific manufacturing regional accelerators. Originality/value suggests sovereign wealth funds should act lead investors under new schemes, joint ventures, GCC, using their offering populations sources employment well is sustainable.
